The Infection Control Association of Macao (ICAM) is pleased to announce that the 4th International Congress of the Asia Pacific Society of Infection Control (APSIC) will be staged in Macau in 2009. The ICAM, comprises of a group of local infection control experts, is established in May 2007. Much of its work is now focusing at the preparation of the forthcoming APSIC which brings together the lessons and models of practice from all over the world.

Macau is closely linked to Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta Region of the mainland China. The theme of the 4th International Congress of the APSIC is "Controlling Infection for Safer Hospital and Safer Community". Patients are not only confined in the hospitals or health care facilities as in the past. The scope of infection control is much wider and it extends to the community. The emergence of infectious diseases in the community, increase of mobile population, changes of setting in which care is delivered and shorten length of stay in hospitals are some factors that explicate the reason for infection control in the community. Controlling infection in the community is an escalating challenge as much as that in the hospital. This unbreakable chain between the community and the hospital will strengthen the infection control infrastructure. As a result, the prevention and control of infection will be seamless. The APSIC congress will invite renowned speakers to deliver messages in different aspects regarding this theme. It is foreseeable that the event will be successful and enjoyable.
